    Create a workspace

    3 min read · Updated View as Markdown

    A workspace is an isolated Tracix environment with its own Kubernetes namespace, ClickHouse database and address. Create one for each environment you want to keep apart, such as production and staging. Tracix provisions it in about four minutes.

    Before you begin

    • You need the Owner or Admin role in your organization.
    • Each plan includes a number of workspaces. See Plans and limits.

    Run the wizard

    In the console, open Workspaces and select New workspace. The wizard saves your progress in this browser: if you leave and come back, a Draft restored banner picks up where you stopped.

    1. Type: choose the datastore

      Choose how the workspace stores its data:

      • Tracix-managed (recommended): Tracix provisions a ClickHouse database for this workspace and runs it for you.
      • ClickHouse · BYO: connect a ClickHouse cluster you already operate.

      Choose carefully: changing the datastore later means redeploying the workspace.

    2. Cloud and region

      Choose Amazon Web Services, then the region. Today, Tracix runs workspaces on AWS in us-east-1.

    3. Datastore: connect your ClickHouse (BYO only)

      This step appears only for ClickHouse · BYO. Enter the cluster's URL, which must be a public HTTPS address, and the Database name. The API key is optional. Tracix keeps the connection details on its servers and never shows the credentials in the browser again.

    4. Overview: name and review

      Enter a Display name of up to 64 characters, such as Production. Tracix adds a generated ID and builds the address from both, such as production-a7k3p2q9.app.tracix.io. Check the Provision summary, then select Create workspace.

    You can rename the workspace at any time, but its address keeps the name it had when you created it, so links never break. Names must be unique in your organization, and Tracix refuses names that match one of the workspace's own endpoints: agents, grpc-agents, otlp, otlp-http, rum and ingest.

    What Tracix provisions

    Provisioning starts as soon as you select Create workspace. For a Tracix-managed workspace, Tracix creates:

    • a Kubernetes namespace for the workspace's services, on a cluster shared between workspaces;
    • the workspace's own ClickHouse database cluster, with the Tracix schema;
    • DNS names and TLS for the workspace's address and its endpoints, such as agents-a7k3p2q9.app.tracix.io for collectors and otlp-http-a7k3p2q9.app.tracix.io for OpenTelemetry data.

    You become the workspace's Admin. Other people need to be added on its Access tab before they can open it; see Invite your team.

    Watch the progress

    The console opens the workspace's page, where a progress panel shows each provisioning step as it runs. The status moves from pending to provisioning to active, usually in about four minutes. When it turns active, a Workspace is live banner links to the workspace, and Open in app.tracix opens it.

    StatusMeaning
    pendingThe request is queued.
    provisioningTracix is creating the workspace's resources.
    activeThe workspace is ready to use.
    failedA step failed. The progress panel marks which one.

    If provisioning fails

    A workspace in the failed status can't be retried in place. Open its Danger zone tab, select Delete, and create the workspace again. If it fails a second time, contact support with the workspace's name.
